I love beef, ribs, and on Saturdays this spot has beef ribs. Came where with a bunch of friends and we wanted to try a little bit of everything. We each got a beef rib and loved them. Then we each got a piece of fried chicken and catfish. The catfish here was amazing. I tried the sides of potatoe salad and mac & cheese both yummy. I also had a baked chicken. They had an oxtail stew and I had an oaxtail and it was fire ! Since it was Saturday they had live music and all ! Restaurant was clean & cashier was helpful. Last item I got was the peach cobbler I tried for the first time ! Definitely coming back here to try more items!

Captain’s Log — Stardate 21,596 Twenty-one thousand, five hundred and ninety-six rotations around this sun. Today, my queen and I set course for Spring Valley — destination: Bankhead, Mississippi-style cooking. Make it so. We materialized inside a modest strip mall — unassuming as an unclaimed planet — yet the moment those doors parted, we crossed into living mythology. David and Rose — keepers of a sacred flame ignited by their remarkable mother in the 1970s right here in San Diego. Their lineage lives not in blood alone, but in smoke, seasoning, cast iron, and cornmeal. I canna’ change the laws of physics — but these descendants have bent them entirely. David welcomed us like returning crew — laughing, storytelling, making every stranger feel like family. Betty anchored the room with quiet admiral’s grace. And Zai — commanding the register with Starfleet precision while simultaneously conjuring miracles in that kitchen alongside Rose. This crew operates in perfect formation. Resistance to their hospitality? Futile. I ordered with the fire of a Klingon and the logic of a Vulcan — nearly the entire menu. What I discovered shook the hull of my expectations. The beef ribs. By the Great Bird of the Galaxy. These were not ribs — they were relics. Smoked to a depth that defies measurement, falling from the bone like a answered prayer. They don’t fill your stomach. They reprogram your memory. The Mississippi catfish. Crisp. Golden. Sovereign. Soul food is not merely cuisine — it is communication. A language spoken in grease and grace, heat and heritage. “Infinite diversity in infinite combinations.” Bankhead lives it. You are not merely eating here. You are tasting a mother’s hands. You are tasting 1970s San Diego — sacrifice, celebration, and the stubborn insistence that some things must never be lost. “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few” — and here, every soul who walks through that door is met abundantly. No one leaves unchanged. Set your course for Spring Valley. Find the strip mall. Walk through those doors — and tell them Captain 619 sent you. There is only one truth in that kitchen — and it is magnificent. Live long and prosper. End log — Captain 619 Voyager. Taster of Worlds. Loyal to flavors that refuse to be forgotten.

We read that black eye peas and cabbage was a good luck dish for the new year. So we came across Bankhead and made the drive down south. This place has a sit down area or you can order take out. The food is premade and set up in cafeteria style. We ordered the lunch special (11am-3pm $10 T-F only) which had 5 choice of main and 4 choice of sides. We picked fried chicken with Mac n cheese. The chicken was crispy but the seasoning was nothing special. Reminded me of other places. The Mac was over cooked and very buttery. Came with a drink. Also got a meal with fried red snapper, black eyes peas and cabbage. Came with relish tartar sauce and corn bread. We also tried the pork ribs. The ribs were baked and overly tender and soft that it fell right off the bones. My favorite would be the ribs, black eye peas and cabbage. There are specials pretty much every day of the week. On weekends they have oxtails and beef ribs. Live music on Saturdays.

The first time I went, it felt dark. This time, during daylight, I was able to get a better sense of the options. Such a variety of food available. & it all taste good! The BBQ chicken and ribs specifically remind me of the ones my father would make back in Rhode Island, and it brings such nostalgia. I like Too Good To Go because I have a hard time picking and I would rather someone surprise me. This time I ordered four and I was surprised again because I got to try new stuff! I still ordered the BBQ chicken on the side because it’s amazing 😁

I can’t celebrate this place enough! I went to college in the south and there isn’t a place for 100 miles that can satiate me when that craving hits! Staff is wonderful. Everything is fresh and made with love! They even have Jazz some nights!
