We were greeted and sat immediately. The environment and music was great. It’s rare to come across a Dominican restaurant in California and we had to try it. We were so happy we did. The service was great, very attentive and personable. The mamajuana cocktail was delicious and hit the spot. The Latin fries were so addicting. Perfect amount of seasoning. The Dominicano sandwich was delicious. Tons of flavor with the pernil and very tender… melt in your mouth. Can’t wait to go back.

I really wanted to love this place because of all the great reviews. It could have just been an off day or the time I visited, since I know consistency can depend on who’s in the kitchen. I went on a Friday around opening time, and unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to the hype. Much of it was underseasoned and overcooked. The fish had beautifully crispy skin, but the inside was dry. The shrimp was rubbery, and the oxtails were very fatty and lacked seasoning. The drinks, however, were excellent and were definitely the highlight of the meal. I’d come back for cocktails, but I don’t see myself returning for the food.

This is one of my all time favorite restaurants. I always sit at the bar. Both bartenders are lovely, but when I come in, it’s usually Jesus. He is passionate and knowledgeable about everything on the menu. He’s attentive and welcoming. I love the ambiance. AlaMar has quickly become one of my comfort spots. The food is spectacular. Every bite/ sip makes me feel like I’m floating. I love the Dominican spaghetti! I love everything 😭. I have yet to try it all, but I’m working on it. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND 😍

The waiters are a little arrogant, but the food is worth it. Shrimp is my favorite dish of the night. Very flavorful and balanced. The salad was very fresh, but I prefer more olive oil. Still, I liked it. Oxtail is good, but not my type. I prefer the braised version of it. Bread pudding is more bread than pudding.

Prices were high (definitely not $10-20 per person!) Service was very slow. I get they're busy, but maybe if it takes over 20 minutes to get water, they should've had less seating. Food was quite salty - I visualized that perhaps someone who did hard, manual labor all day might like the saltiness. The specials beef empanada were two hot pockets of meh. The "goat street food" dish was actually quite nice, not too salty, meat was fresh, tender and crispy, and well flavored. I think I'll give them another chance some time and try another meaty option, at an off peak time.
